Manku-Chan created by Rokudenashiko which translate to “good for nothing girl” pseudo name.
“I am using my anger as a springboard, laughter my weapon of choice in the battle. If the police want to use this manga to further wear me down. I will hold my drafting pen with this hand even harder.” -Rokudenashiko
I will refer to her as Roku for short throughout…
She has been an artist and sculptor of over five years, working to demystify the pussy via cute dioramas.
Arrested Twice Since 2014 she has been battling the courts and wrote and illustrated a comic called Manku-Chan about her treatment and emotional tribulations with the police, prison, and court systems. The cops infiltrated her art shows and presentations months before they sprung an arrest. The media tried to de-value her, by headlining her as “the-so-called-artiste”
Cops have 23 days to interrogate a suspect. Court conviction rate is over 99% She was detained for a month.
According to Japanese law of Obscenity Article 179 made in 1907 and revised 40 years ago…
The superior court reckons obscenity as:
“Anything eliciting sexual desire, excitement or arousal in vain, or that violated a reasonable person’s sense of propriety, or principles of righteous and moral sexuality.”
How does this law stand every year against the Kanamara Matsuri-The Steel Phallus Festival a shinto yearly fest honoring the penis. How is male genitalia so overtly tolerate, even celebrated and the utterance of Manka could destroy your social “decency”
Roku used crowdfunding to finance a kayak created with a 3D printer in the shape of her pussy. I see this as an artful exhibition a celebration of herself much like the Steel Phallus festival fun celebration. I think that art is subjective, but it’s not like she made lollipops of her vagina to pass around. In fact her art was only available and in the public eye for those searching and looking into her work. Roku distributed a 3D copy of her vagina for all the patrons that donated to help fund the project. The court fined her 3,600 because of the 3D file she shared… has been used by recipients to create an arousing sex-toy (probably by the policemen themselves). The pussy boat, pussy iphone case, pussy remote controlled car, and pussy lampshade was confiscated but still qualified as art in the court.
Roku appealed to the court’s ruling on the basis that the 3D data she distributed was crucial to her Pussy Boat project to be made. She didn’t send out the data for the exchange of money, she send the 3D file as a gift for helping her crowdfund her project. Roku has now teamed up with Pen America an organization that defends creative expression and offers financial support to persecuted artists.
As a cathartic reaction to her arrest she created an experienced based manga. I was blown away with the hearty, funny, and shocking emotions Roku’s manga evoked. The parallel to American censoring and the Criminalization of sex work rung high in my ears. We Should make a comic strip of a sex worker being arrested and put through the system. The visuals would profoundly let people see the reality… How poisoned our perceptions on sexuality have created needless suffering and the continual oppression of female independence.
If the system in power can dictate what is “sexually appropriate between consenting adults” then those in power will belittle and bully with dehumanizing appetites.
Most women in Japan, Roku reflects, do not know what an average pussy looks like. Because of the censorship laws; shame, embarrassment, and a lack of love, knowledge and connection is the offspring and body dysmorphia it’s grandchild. Silence, isolation and censoring are the greatest intrusion to the social natures we creatures are.
I love how Roku’s art carries a very light and fun energy, compared to most feminist work that range from terrified to angry. I think that her style of activism is very inclusive to making allies and dismembering gender inequality and confusion.
“I have effectively created an arts practice by angering the police, so they are part of my art, too,” she said.
I lot of art come from repressed feelings and I want to create more of that which moves and changes those feelings into healing and connecting with others.
The Japanese Federation of Bar Associates says that Japan’s prison system looks squeaky from afar with it’s; non overcrowding, low rape, drug and escapes incidents. However they reported that this was because of their strict totalitarian rule. Prisoners can be arbitrarily punished in solitary confinement without the freedom to move for; looking around, speaking or doing anything without permission. -Sheryl WuDunn for the New York Times.
At a gallery showing Roku was arrested for the second time, for the digital distribution of obscene media, destroying evidence of her crimes, her pussy shaped chocolate cake and pussy molds her and other women made in a workshop. Her bail set to 15k, which is am sure the bill of her 6 member legal team. In court the judge interrupted Roku twice because she used the word Manko (pussy) and would only allow her to continue her statement until she “cooperated”.
“It angers me that the more manko I create, the more children emerge from this vital organ that we should respect.” -Roku
She says with great humor that to change this world you have to be like Jesus, get arrested, crucified and resurrected.
The shadow bans and Instagram witch hunt which is American’s 21 century sensation is incomparable to what Roku’s culture enforces. Imagine Ruko going into the 6 story sex shop in Japan where toys of pussy pockets reside abundantly. The image on the box of the pussy pocket is a pixelated pussy. It really tortures a unique system of thousands of beautiful sensuous nerves into nothing but an artificial wrench to change the oil of a car. It baffles me the amount of cognitive dissonance one can bear. Compared to the U.S, Japan is a deeply puritanical country, albeit their media and advertising is saturated with sexual messages; suppression of human nature really makes the most interesting societies. Roku’s plight makes me so grateful for the freedoms I do possess. It’s not like Instagram, and the online media platforms is my government. However the feds are controlling the media which consequently endangers our platform of visibility, endangers our livelihood and ability to research, network and choose good people to work with.
FOSTA/SESTA
Japan’s cultural stake on sexuality imprisons men and women to depreciate one another and causes an overwork or underwork in relationships. Help to restore balance by celebrating the pussy and cock! Nipples too!
